A Painting Stolen by Nazis Found in Argentina

  • The painting was discovered in an advertisement for real estate sales in Argentina.
  • The portrait belonged to the Jewish dealer, the late Jack Gudshtiker.
  • The search for lost artworks has been ongoing for over 20 years.

The painting, which was stolen by the Nazis more than 80 years ago, was found in an advertisement for real estate sales in Argentina. The portrait, known as Portrait of a Lady (Contessa Colleoni), was painted by the Italian artist Giuseppe Ghislandi and was stolen from the Jewish dealer Jack Gudshtiker in 1940.

This portrait had been featured in a photograph that accompanies the advertisement for the sale of a building in the suburb of Buenos Aires. According to the Dutch newspaper AD, the painting has been added to the database of stolen artworks and is recognized as unreturned after World War II.

The portrait previously belonged to Jack Gudshtiker, who fled from the Netherlands in the spring of 1940 but was killed shortly after fleeing. After his death, the Nazis purchased his collection of artworks at a reduced price.

It is noted that the painting passed into the hands of Friedrich Kadgion, a Nazi officer who fled to Switzerland, and later settled in Argentina. His daughters, who still own the building, refuse to cooperate with journalists who have tried to learn more about the painting.

Heidi von Saher, the only heir of Gudshtiker, has been searching for his stolen artworks for over two decades and plans to recover Portrait of a Lady.
