Lithuania Elects New Prime Minister Ruginėnė

  • Inga Ruginėnė has been elected as the new Prime Minister of Lithuania.
  • The new government will present a program for parliamentary approval.
  • Ruginėnė plans to visit Ukraine and Poland at the beginning of her term.

The Lithuanian parliament elected the new Prime Minister Inga Ruginėnė on September 26, 2025, the former head of the trade union. 78 deputies voted for her candidacy, 35 were against, and 14 abstained.

Ruginėnė, who previously belonged to the Social Democratic Party before the elections last year, previously held the position of Minister of Social Affairs and Labor. She replaced Gintautas Paluckas, who submitted his resignation after the investigation into his business.

The President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda, who nominated Ruginėnė's candidacy, noted that she is "a constructive negotiator." The Prime Minister emphasized that her goal will be to stabilize the government and fulfill the promises made during the elections.

The new government must present a program that will need to be approved by parliament. Ruginėnė highlighted the importance of cooperation with all factions and the need to take into account the opinions of others.

In Lithuania's foreign policy, no significant changes are expected, as the president remains a key figure on the international arena. Ruginėnė plans to make her first visits to Ukraine and Poland.
