Lisa Cook, who became the first Black woman to hold a position in the Federal Reserve System, is currently facing challenges regarding her appointment by President Donald Trump. Cook was appointed to this position in 2022 by President Joe Biden, and her term is set to last until January 2038.

Problems with her initial appointment began at the confirmation stage when Republicans opposed her candidacy. As a result, Vice President Kamala Harris was forced to break a tie in the Senate. As the first Black woman to receive this position, her appointment has been subject to scrutiny.

Recently, Trump announced his intention to dismiss Cook, citing allegations of fraud, even though Cook was not accused of any wrongdoing. Her attorney, Abbe Lowell, stated that Trump's attempt is illegal and baseless, and he plans to file a lawsuit in court.

Since her appointment, Cook has actively voiced her opinion alongside Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, supporting important decisions related to economic policy. Her research often addresses economic inequalities and racial issues. Cook has also been recognized in academic circles, particularly for studying the impact of racial disparities on economic activity.

As a native of Georgia, she studied at Spelman College, then at Oxford University, and also obtained a doctorate in economics from the University of California, Berkeley. She actively promotes issues related to the challenges that women, particularly Black women, face in the field of economics.
