Research Indicates the Impact of AI on Young Workers
- Young workers are suffering the most from job losses due to AI.
- Employment is decreasing in areas where AI automates tasks rather than supplements work.
- In professions with low automation risk, an increase in employment is observed.
According to research from Stanford University, the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) leads to job losses among young workers in vulnerable sectors. The study encompasses millions of workers and thousands of companies in the U.S. from January 2021 to July 2025. It was found that since the widespread introduction of generative AI, young workers aged 22-25 experienced a 13% decline in employment.
The most affected professions are those related to software development and client servicing. Although the overall employment level increased, for young workers, this growth began to slow down at the end of 2022, when AI became widely accessible to the general public.
The research shows that the decline in employment is concentrated in sectors where AI automates tasks rather than supplements them. Meanwhile, in sectors where AI is used to enhance work, employment remained stable or even increased. For example, in healthcare, where young workers engage in supportive roles, an increase in employment is observed.
However, AI continues to evolve, and its capacity to automate tasks is growing. It is important to note that in professions with low exposure to AI, such as caregiving and roles requiring interpersonal skills that demand creative abilities, employment for young people is increasing parallel to older workers.
