However, in the 84th minute, Mark Hughes, who is also a loaned player from Chelsea, equalized the score, netting his first goal for Sunderland, which allowed them to advance to the penalty shootout.

The head coach of Sunderland, Reji Le Brice, fielded a completely different starting lineup after the defeat against Burnley, with new signings Nordin Muk'ele, Arthur Masuaku, and Hughes, who received a chance in the starting lineup.

Huddersfield, in turn, changed 10 players after their victory over Stevenage, with Murrey Ulleson remaining in the squad, while former Sunderland player Lynden Gooch became the captain of the team.

Sunderland aimed to respond with an early goal, but Huddersfield also created moments when Dion Charlyz failed to get a shot on target, while a low shot from Kameron Ashia was easily stopped by the goalkeeper.

In the second half, Sunderland's intensity increased, and the team continued to press, equalizing the score within six minutes before the end of regular time.

The game was halted for six minutes due to a medical incident in the stands, and in the added time, the game transitioned to the penalty shootout, where Huddersfield proved to be stronger.
