Stuttgart, who won the Cup last year, found themselves in a tough situation when Braunschweig, a team from a lower league, opened the scoring in the 9th minute. However, just four minutes later, Ermedin Demirovic equalized the score with a goal.

In the 77th minute, Braunschweig took the lead again with two goals from Fabio Di Michele Sanchez, but Stuttgart responded in the 89th minute when Nick Wöltemade equalized, which led to extra time.

In extra time, Stuttgart once again took the lead after an own goal, but Braunschweig managed to equalize in the 104th minute, which sent the match to a penalty shootout.

In the penalty shootout, both teams had their chances, but in the end, Stuttgart won successfully with a penalty converted by Lorenz Assenion, after goalkeeper Alexander Nyubel saved three attempts.
