Negotiations between Iran and European states regarding the nuclear program have taken place

  • The negotiations in Geneva did not result in an agreement between the parties.
  • Iran stated its intention to diplomatically negotiate and lift sanctions.
  • The deadline for the reinstatement of sanctions coincides with yellow.

On August 26, 2025, negotiations took place in Geneva between high-ranking officials from Iran and three European countries, namely the UK, France, and Germany. The main topic of discussion was the issue of resuming nuclear inspections in Iran to avoid a recurrence of reinstated economic sanctions, known as "snapback measures," following their suspension in accordance with the 2015 agreement.

These negotiations were held against the backdrop of the reinstatement of sanctions by European states, which plan to revert to the UN Security Council by the end of September when the nuclear deal's timeline concludes.

According to the words of the Iranian Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, Tehran remains committed to diplomacy and achieving mutual understanding. However, specific results of the negotiations were not disclosed.

These negotiations have become another round of conflict between Iran and Israel in June 2025, which negatively impacted the nuclear negotiations with the USA and led to the suspension of Iran's cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Under the 2015 agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iran was allowed to enrich uranium, but the enrichment level was limited to 3.67%. After the USA's withdrawal from the agreement in 2018, Iran also ceased to comply with its implementation.

Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in June 2025 further complicated the situation, as Iran stopped cooperating with international inspectors. Iran claims that its nuclear program has a peaceful nature, regardless of the fact that it is the only country without nuclear weapons that enriches uranium up to 60%.

European countries and the USA have set a strict deadline for the end of September for the reinstatement of the snapback mechanism if Iran does not fulfill a number of conditions, including the resumption of negotiations with the USA and allowing inspectors access to its nuclear facilities.

Currently, negotiations between Iran and European states continue, but the absence of an agreement increases the risk of reinstated sanctions.
