Federal Judge Criticizes Arrests in Washington During Trump Operation
- The judge Faruqi criticizes the illegal arrests taking place in Washington.
- Many of the arrests involve unspecified crimes that should not have been processed in federal court.
- The U.S. government is grappling with issues related to the prosecution of charges in the case of the attack on the FBI agent.
Washington (AP) — A federal judge has ruled the illegality of arrests occurring in Washington as part of an operation announced by President Donald Trump. Judge Ziya Faruqi, during the hearing, expressed concerns regarding the manner in which the government processes cases, noting that arrests could potentially lead to violations of human rights and illegal detentions.
Faruqi stated: "We are not just accusing people of crimes, where they are in custody for a number of weeks and then say: 'Oh, my mistake.'" His comments came in response to a large number of arrests that have taken place since the operation began on September 7, resulting in the detention of over a thousand individuals.
Many of these arrests involve unspecified crimes that are usually processed by local law enforcement agencies. For example, the case of Torec Rili, whose arrest was for illegal possession of marijuana in a Trader Joe's store. Judge Faruqi acknowledged that in the context of some known cases, there was "the largest illegal seizure that I have ever seen in my life."
The U.S. government, under the leadership of prosecutor Janine Pirro, is trying to solidify its position in the cases of arrests, having already had three times the court reject requests to dismiss charges related to the attack on the FBI figure in the case. This raises questions about the legality and sufficiency of new approaches to law enforcement in Washington.
Judge Faruqi also emphasized that "illegality cannot come from the government." He expressed concern regarding racial profiling, stating that police practices are often centered on detained individuals who appear to be of a certain ethnicity.
