Nissan Ends Production of the GT-R Sports Car

  • Nissan has completed the production of the R35 GT-R due to increasing ecological standards.
  • The last GT-R was assembled at the Tochigi plant.
  • The company's president noted that the model may return in the future.

This was reported by The Yomiuri Shimbun, Jalopnik.

On August 27, 2025, Nissan Motor Co. announced the completion of production of its legendary R35 GT-R sports car due to increasing difficulties in meeting strict ecological standards.

The last GT-R rolled off the assembly line at the Kamikawa plant, a prefecture of Tochigi, in northern Tokyo. The president and CEO of Nissan, Ivan Espinoza, stated that the model could be revived in the future.

"For many GT-R enthusiasts around the world, I want to say that this is not the end of the GT-R forever. Our goal is to ensure that the name GT-R returns one day," he stated.

The GT-R first appeared in 1969 as a legendary version of the popular Skyline model. After two pauses in production, the GT-R was revived in 2007 as a model distinct from the Skyline. Its engines were crafted by hand by nine master craftsmen.

The Japanese automaker sold nearly 48,000 units of this sports car over the last 18 years. The last car that rolled off the assembly line has a Midnight Purple color and gold accents.

During its existence, the R35 GT-R became the first production car to break the 7:30 barrier at the Nürburgring, and its time continued to decrease year by year. Despite the fact that the price of the GT-R has increased over time, it has always remained a productive vehicle.

Although Nissan does not have clear plans for the next GT-R model, it is known that a new version will likely be developed in the future.
