In 2022, the actor's family announced his withdrawal from acting due to aphasia, a condition that affects communication. Heming Willis explained that at first, the symptoms manifested as a lack of speech and withdrawal, which lasted for a long time for the family.

In July 2023, a diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia was confirmed, which is an incurable degenerative condition. "It was better, but it was still important to get a clear diagnosis," family members noted then.

Heming Willis shared that he still sees "the sparkle" in his personality. "We still get moments when he smiles, and that is very important for us," she said. She also plans to release a book about living with a person who will be published on September 9.
