FEMA Employees Received Administrative Leave After Signing Protest Letter
- More than 180 FEMA employees signed a protest letter
- Some employees received administrative leave
- The letter contains criticism of the policies of the Trump administration
Employees of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) received administrative leave after signing a protest letter sent to Congress and the FEMA review board. The letter, signed by more than 180 employees, criticizes the agency's response to emergency situations and its ability to react to disasters.
Among the signatories, 35 individuals signed openly, while 141 individuals did so anonymously, citing fears of reprisals. The primary two of these employees received notifications about the leave, which is not a disciplinary measure, but requires daily verification of attendance.
The letter outlines six points against the current policies at FEMA, including the need for approval of contracts over $100,000 for internal security by Kristi Noem, which hampers the agency's ability to perform its functions. It also expresses concern over the transfer of some employees to immigration services, the lack of qualified leadership, and delays in training programs.
Employees from other agencies, such as the National Institutes of Health and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, also signed protest letters, resulting in nearly 140 EPA employees also being sent on leave.
