Mitchell Brown becomes the first AFL player to openly discuss bisexuality
- Mitchell Brown has become the first openly bisexual player in the AFL.
- In his statement, he discusses the need for change in the culture surrounding homosexuality.
- Brown hopes that his example will inspire other players.
Mitchell Brown has become the first person in the history of the Australian Football League (AFL) to openly declare his bisexuality. He played for the West Coast Eagles from 2007 to 2016, participating in 94 matches.
At 36 years old, Brown decided to come out as bisexual, hoping that his example could help others to do the same. He emphasized that acknowledging one's orientation was a significant reason for his decision to end his career.
Brown noted that there is a culture of "hypermasculinity" in the AFL, where homophobic expressions are often prevalent. He stressed that previously, it was not possible to openly talk about one's feelings or questions without the fear of judgment.
Since his announcement, the news has been positively received on social media, and the AFL Players’ Association characterized his step as "courageous." Brown called for a change in the league's culture, emphasizing the importance of supporting positive role models for future generations.
He also expressed hope that his decision would provide a safe space for those who still hide their orientation. Brown affirmed that there are indeed other players in the AFL who find it difficult to talk about their sexuality.
