Las Vegas — The cyberattack led to the shutdown of state institutions in Nevada for two days, and also rendered some websites and telephone lines inaccessible, officials reported in a statement from the governor's office.
Government agencies announced that their departments would reopen for personal services, along with information from the technology office of Governor Joe Lombardo, whose website was also affected. The attack was identified last week, and authorities are currently conducting an investigation. Officials have not been able to provide technical details to safeguard internal systems during the investigation.
No evidence of compromise of personal information has been found. Emergency services remain accessible. State employees were sent home on administrative leave on Monday, but many of them returned to work on Tuesday, and employees continue to report to the office as their computer systems are back online.
Previously, cyberattacks had already targeted state services in other states in the U.S. For instance, in 2020, an attack on the Tillamook County in Oregon led to the compromise of computer systems and a website. In 2018, an attack on software programmers resulted in the shutdown of the automated dispatcher service 911 in Baltimore for approximately 17 hours.
