Severe Rainfall Causes Flooding and 8 Deaths in Vietnam and Thailand
- In Vietnam, seven people have died, and one person is missing.
- In Thailand, one death has been confirmed as a result of the flooding.
- The tropical storm Kadsiki prompted the evacuation of thousands of people.
On Wednesday, September 27, strong rains led to flooding and landslides in parts of Southeast Asia, where at least eight deaths have been confirmed as a result of the tropical storm. In Vietnam, flooding occurred in several northern and central provinces, where seven people have died, one person is believed to be missing, and 34 others have been injured, state media reported.
In some areas of northern Vietnam, nearly 20 centimeters of rain fell overnight, and warnings about flooding remain in effect for some bordering territories. In Thailand, one person has died, and another is believed to be missing due to flooding in part of northern Chiang Mai.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation of Thailand reported that many homes have been damaged, and several people have been injured from rapid floods and landslides in northern provinces. The meteorological department of Thailand warned of strong rains in northern and northeastern regions, advising residents in areas near the foothills and low-lying territories to be cautious due to possible flooding and landslides.
The rains have been a consequence of the tropical storm Kadsiki, which made landfall in central Vietnam on Monday, where thousands of people were evacuated from unsafe areas. Previously, Kadsiki also caused strong winds and rains on the southern island of Hainan in China.
Researchers predict that by 2024, ocean flooding will increase due to climate change, leading to the formation of tropical cyclones in Southeast Asia closer to the coast, which will increase risks for cities.
