Thames Water Announces Plan to Pay Fines for Pollution
- Thames Water has announced a plan to pay fines totaling £122.7 million.
- 20% of the fines must be paid by the end of March.
- The company aims to avoid temporary nationalization.
The company Thames Water has announced a plan to pay fines amounting to £122.7 million, imposed by the regulator Ofwat, due to failure to meet requirements for the treatment of wastewater and violations of dividend payment rules.
According to the agreement, Thames Water must pay £24.5 million, which will account for 20% of the total fine amount, by the end of March. The remaining 80% will depend on the financial stability of the company and its ability to attract new investments.
Ofwat stated that the remaining fine must be paid within 30 days after the company receives funding for recovery or exits the bankruptcy process, should a special administrative regime be introduced.
The fines were the result of an investigation that revealed significant failures by the company in construction and management of infrastructure for wastewater treatment. Thames Water received £104.5 million for pollution of the natural environment, as well as £18.2 million for violations of dividend payment conditions.
The company continues to hold negotiations with creditors regarding financial recovery, as it remains under the threat of temporary nationalization. The government has appointed consultants from the banking sector to assess possible scenarios, should the company declare bankruptcy.
Thames Water serves 16 million customers in London and the southeast of England, and it needs to find ways to ensure financial stability without increasing tariffs for consumers.
