Reports on the severe flooding in Pakistan due to heavy rains and water releases

  • The number of displaced persons in Pakistan has exceeded 150,000
  • In India, nearly 34 people have died due to the rains
  • Water releases from Indian dams threaten flooding in Punjab

This is reported by The Yomiuri Shimbun, Asharq Al-Awsat.

August 27, 2025, Lahore, Pakistan – In the Punjab region, particularly in the city of Lahore, a "very high alert" level of flooding has been declared. This is due to heavy rains and India’s decision to release water from two dams.

In the affected areas, intense monsoon rains have led to serious flooding. Water releases from Indian dams may further worsen the situation in Punjab, where a significant portion of Pakistan's population resides.

On Tuesday, August 26, the Pakistan Disaster Management Authority reported that India had opened all sluice gates of the Thein dam on the Ravi River. The Pakistani government also received another warning about possible water releases from the Madhopur dam.

In connection with the deteriorating situation, evacuations began in Punjab. The number of displaced persons has exceeded 150,000, with nearly 35,000 having left their homes voluntarily following the previous warnings about flooding.

The government is conducting evacuations from dozens of towns along the Ravi, Sutlej, and Chenab rivers, as these rivers have already reported medium to high levels of flooding. New heavy rains are expected in the region in the coming days.

At the same time, in the northern regions of India, heavy rains have also led to flooding and landslides, resulting in the deaths of nearly 34 people. In particular, a landslide on the road to the shrine of Vaishno Devi took the lives of 30 people.

In Jammu and Kashmir, due to the weather conditions, schools were closed, and communication services and electricity need to be restored.

Authorities in the affected areas continue to monitor the situation and are implementing measures for additional assistance to those affected.
