Friends of Christie suspect that he may have committed suicide. Police reported that the death will be referred to the coroner, and there is currently no additional information.

Christie suspected that he was suffering from Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain condition linked to multiple instances of suicide among players in the National Football League (NFL). This condition can only be diagnosed post-mortem. Christie expressed a desire to leave his brain for research in order to help make rugby safer.

He was a friend and teammate of Bill Gaiter, who also died by suicide in 2023, becoming the first New Zealand rugby player diagnosed with CTE. Christie urged to support the Bill Gaiter Foundation to raise awareness of the consequences of head injuries.

Christie repeatedly suffered head injuries during his career, and after retiring, he reported severe headaches and memory loss. CTE can cause behavioral changes, mood swings, and cognitive impairments.

In 2023, the British law firm Rylands Garth reported that over a thousand former rugby players filed lawsuits against sports organizations over head injuries, sustained during their careers.
