Pope Leo XIII, in a recent appeal to the international community regarding the ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has been ongoing for almost two years, emphasized the need for a permanent ceasefire, the release of hostages, and the provision of humanitarian aid.

The Pope stressed that the conflict has resulted in a large number of victims and destruction, with over 62,000 Palestinians reported dead since the start of military actions in Gaza in July 2023, and a humanitarian crisis has also arisen.

The Pope expressed concern about the ongoing deportation of Palestinians and called attention to the rights of civilians. He also appealed to governments of various countries to ensure safe access to humanitarian aid to the affected regions.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the country will continue its military operation in Gaza while simultaneously seeking to achieve a ceasefire agreement. In this context, relatives of hostages express concern that military actions may jeopardize their loved ones.

The Pope also recalled a joint statement from patriarchs, who called for not evacuating clergy and civilians who remained in Gaza, stating that the displacement of people could lead to tragic consequences.
