FEMA Employees Criticize Shortages and Receive Leave

  • FEMA employees signed a letter with critical shortages.
  • A few agency workers received administrative leave.
  • President Trump is reviewing changes in FEMA's structure.

Employees of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) signed an open letter, in which they expressed concern about shortages in the agency that jeopardize its ability to respond to disasters. More than 180 individuals signed the letter, warning about the potential for repeated national disasters, similar to Hurricane Katrina. As a result, some of these employees were sent on administrative leave.

In the letter sent to Congress, employees expressed concern regarding funding shortages, reduced staffing levels, and interference from the Trump administration. They emphasized the need to protect the agency from further interference from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and called for the appointment of a permanent FEMA leader.

After signing the letter, some employees received notification about leave, which, according to FEMA representatives, is not a disciplinary measure. Close to thirty agency employees, according to reports, have already been removed from their positions this year.

It is known that President Trump is reviewing the possibility of changing the structure of FEMA, emphasizing that accountability for responding to disasters must lie with local government agencies. However, experts warn that reducing federal support could create an impossible financial burden for states that do not have enough resources for self-response to major disasters.

Many of the letter's signatories remain anonymous due to fear of reprisals, but they are calling for changes that could help prevent repeated disasters, similar to Hurricane Katrina, which claimed thousands of lives in 2005.
