  • The vote on union representation for workers is taking place at the BlueOval SK plant in Kentucky.
  • The BlueOval SK plant is the largest investment project in the state.
  • Production of batteries for electric vehicles in the U.S. is increasing.

In Kentucky, voting is underway that could be decisive for workers at the plant producing batteries for electric vehicles. Workers are deciding whether to affiliate with the United Auto Workers union, which continues a streak of successes for unions in the South, where organized labor is facing challenges in creating stable conditions.

The voting will last two days and will conclude in the middle of the week, approximately two weeks after the start of production at the BlueOval SK plant, a joint venture between Ford Motor Co. and South Korea's SK On, with an investment of nearly $6 billion.

Workers at this plant will produce the electric pickup Ford F-150 Lightning and its electric commercial vehicle E-Transit.

Governor of Kentucky Andy Beshear noted that this complex is the largest economic investment project in the state's history.

Workers at Kumarie Logan expressed a desire to obtain union representation, which, in their view, can only be provided by a union. She stated that with her contract, her wages and benefits would be guaranteed.

Union representation at the workplace has also become an important issue for workers at the plant. The company asserts that union representation is its main priority.

General Director of BlueOval SK Michael Adams emphasized that the joint venture creates good jobs in America and strengthens the domestic supply chain.

The BlueOval project is significant for Governor Beshear, who has ambitions for future choices in 2028. He stressed that this project would attract a wave of new investments and create jobs in Kentucky.

Organized workers have gained victories in the southern states, including at General Motors and Volkswagen plants.

Production of batteries for electric vehicles in the U.S. is increasing amid global competition, especially as Chinese manufacturers offer accessible electric vehicles.

Despite the tightening of state regulations on electric vehicles, major automakers in Detroit are transitioning to electric technologies. Ford announced investments of $2 billion for modernization at the Louisville plant to produce more accessible electric vehicles.

The results of the vote at the BlueOval plant may only be announced in the coming weeks.
