Trump threatens to cut federal funding for state education programs that do not include references to transgender people

  • States must include references to transgender people in state education programs.
  • Funding may be cut if requirements are not met.
  • Critics believe this will harm youth.

The Trump administration announced that 46 states, territories, and the District of Columbia could lose federal funding for state education programs if they do not include references to transgender people. In letters sent on August 26, 2025, the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) demanded that all information regarding gender ideology be removed within 60 days.

The Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) was created in 2010 to address adolescent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, which are passed through state channels. In the letters, Trump specified that "federal funds will not be used to formulate unsafe ideological practices."

If states do not meet the requirements, funding will be halted. For example, New York state may lose over 6 million dollars, while Delaware could lose 333 thousand dollars.

This step is part of a broader policy of the administration, whose aim is to reduce the recognition of transgender people at the federal level. Earlier, orders were issued that prohibit transgender girls from participating in girls' sports teams and block federal funding for medical facilities that provide support to youth in transition.

Critics argue that such actions harm youth. Advocates assert that inclusive education reduces stigmatization and improves life outcomes.
