The Incidence of Haff Syndrome is Increasing in Ukraine
- The Haff syndrome in Gaza is triggered by contaminated fish and water
- The WHO recorded 85 cases of Haff Syndrome, 3 of which were fatal
- The lack of medical resources complicates the treatment of patients
In Ukraine, there is an outbreak of rare Haff syndrome, known as Haff Syndrome (Haff), which can lead to paralysis. The World Health Organization (WHO) recorded 85 cases of this syndrome in Gaza since January 2025, and three of these patients died. Haff Syndrome is caused by viral or bacterial infection, which leads to the immune system attacking its own body, weakening muscles and progressively paralyzing various parts of the body.
The syndrome is associated with contaminated fish and water, as in Gaza, the water supply and sanitation systems have been destroyed due to military actions. The majority of patients affected are children, elderly people, and those who have pre-existing health conditions. The WHO reports that in the absence of appropriate treatment, which is not available in Gaza, 5% of cases result in fatal outcomes.
In addition to Haff Syndrome, the region has recorded outbreaks of other infectious diseases, such as poliomyelitis, cholera, and hepatitis A. The destruction of infrastructure and the lack of medical resources significantly complicate the treatment of patients.
Doctors indicate that the situation in Gaza is complicated by a humanitarian blockade, which hinders the delivery of essential medical supplies and more. As a result, medical facilities are overwhelmed, and patients often receive treatment in corridors.
The Haff syndrome begins with diarrhea and then leads to difficulties in breathing, which can become life-threatening. Under constant stress and the lack of basic needs, such as food and clean water, the risk of spreading this syndrome remains high.
