In Ukraine, the investigation into the theft of paintings from the era of old masters continues

  • The painting stolen by the Nazis was not found during the search.
  • The investigation is ongoing, the prosecutor reported on the exclusion of the seizure.
  • Descendants of Gudshtiker are preparing to file claims regarding the restitution.

The Argentine police continue the search for the painting stolen by the Nazis during World War II. The portrait of a lady by Italian artist Giuseppe Ghislandi, who belonged to Jewish merchant Isaac Gudshtiker, was discovered in a building in Mar-del-Plata, but during the search, the painting was not found.

Federal prosecutor Carlos Martinez reported that the painting has not been identified, and the investigation continues. During the search, items were excluded that could be useful for the investigation, including two firearms.

It is known that the painting, which disappeared in 1946, belonged to Gudshtiker, who was killed in 1940, falling victim to the Nazis. After the war, the painting was acquired by Friedrich Cadgion, a high-ranking Nazi who fled to Argentina. His daughters, who own the building, became the subject of judicial investigation.

According to information published in the Dutch press, the painting was listed on the website of a real estate agency that was involved in the sale of the building. However, after the publication of this information, the listing was removed, and Cadgion's daughter changed her name on social media.

Investigators believe that the painting, which was removed during the search, is original, and they plan to take further actions for its restitution. The descendants of Gudshtiker intend to file claims for the restitution of the painting.
