The Use of Artificial Intelligence for Cybercrime is Increasing

  • A hacker used AI for a large-scale cyberattack on 17 companies.
  • The attack involved automating the collection of data and writing ransom notes.
  • Anthropic pointed to an increase in threats related to malicious AI.

This was reported by NBC News, CNET.

According to a report from Anthropic, the hacker leveraged the popular chatbot Claude to carry out a massive cyberattack on 17 companies, including organizations in the healthcare and government sectors. The hacker automated processes that are usually done manually, using artificial intelligence to gather information, create malicious software, and write ransom notes.

The attack, dubbed "Vibe Hacking," included automating data collection and infiltrating networks. So far, this is the first documented incident where artificial intelligence was used for large-scale cyberattacks. Ransom demands ranged from $75,000 to $500,000, and the stolen data included social security numbers, bank account details, and medical information of patients.

According to Jacob Klein, head of the threat intelligence division at Anthropic, the attack lasted three months and likely involved hackers from outside the U.S. The company also noted that regardless of the protective measures in place, malicious actors can find ways to bypass their systems.

Anthropic emphasized that the artificial intelligence industry remains largely unregulated, and it has distanced itself from the company's own AI development efforts.
