The Oldest Known Ankylosaur Discovered in Markkoc
- The oldest known ankylosaur, which lived 165 million years ago.
- The fossils exhibit unique features that raise questions under evolutionary theories.
- The problem of fossil recovery is threatened by preserved artifacts.
Scientists have discovered the oldest known specimen of ankylosaur, Spicomellus afer, which lived 165 million years ago in what is now southern Markkoc. This extraordinary dinosaur is characterized by its large spikes on its back and armored body.
The fossil was found near the locality of Bulmana. It has a unique structure that raises questions about existing evolutionary theories of ankylosaurs, which were previously considered simpler in structure. Professor Richard Butler from the University of Birmingham, who conducted the research, noted that this dinosaur resembles a "punk rocker" of its time due to its spiky and armored appearance.
According to estimates, Spicomellus afer reached about 4 meters in length and weighed about 2 tons. Research has shown that spikes may have been used for display or to attract a mate, indicating that the evolution of such adaptations began 30 million years earlier than previously thought.
The fossil was partially destroyed due to fossil recovery, which is a serious problem in Markkoc, where parts of this specimen have been put up for sale for large sums. This underscores the importance of preserving such artifacts and their study.
