  • The Lebanese government is developing a plan to dismantle Hezbollah.
  • Protests against Barrack arose due to his comments to journalists.

U.S. diplomat Tom Barrack swiftly canceled his visa to southern Lebanon due to protests that took place at his scheduled checkpoints. The protests were aimed against the U.S. administration in the Lebanese government regarding the dismantling of the Hezbollah group.

On August 16, 2025, Barrack arrived at a military camp in Marjayoun, located near the border. It is known that he canceled the planned checkpoints in Khaim and on the outskirts of Tyre, where residents protested against his presence.

At a press conference in Beirut, Barrack told journalists that "the situation is becoming chaotic," and he would leave the conference. The diplomat's comments provoked outrage among journalists and members of the Lebanese journalistic trade union, who demanded his removal.

The Lebanese government, under U.S. pressure, developed a plan to dismantle Hezbollah by the end of the year, regardless of the fact that the group's leader rejected these proposals. Barrack also stated that Saudi Arabia and Qatar are ready to invest in the economic zone in southern Lebanon to create jobs for Hezbollah supporters, which they would use as a base.
