In the Democratic Republic of Congo, at least 43 people were killed as a result of an attack on a Catholic church, carried out by militants of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) on July 28. The attack took place in the town of Komanda in Ituri Province, where worshippers had gathered for service.
Among the dead were nine children. The militants also set fire to buildings and shops located near the church. According to a representative of the UN humanitarian mission, such attacks on defenseless civilians are unacceptable and violate international human rights norms.
This attack comes after a prolonged period of calm in the region. The Congolese army described the attack, calling it a "mass slaughter." They accused the ADF of trying to spread terror among the civilian population.
The ADF forces, which have links to the terrorist organization "Islamic State," have been carrying out attacks on civilians since the 1990s. They are known for their brutality, often using machetes and knives for attacks on peaceful residents.
