Main Facts
Tesla's CEO Elon Musk announced that the company has signed an agreement with Samsung for the supply of chips for a total of $16.5 billion. This agreement anticipates the production of the next generation AI6 chips at a new Samsung factory in Texas. Manufacturing will begin in 2026 and continue until the end of 2033.
In a social media post, Musk noted that "the new Samsung factory in Texas will be dedicated to the production of AI6 chips for Tesla." He also emphasized the strategic importance of this agreement.
This agreement may help Samsung improve its situation in the business of contract manufacturing, which has been suffering losses. Samsung's shares rose by 6.22% following the announcement of the agreement.
Manufacturing Capabilities
Samsung previously announced the signing of the agreement without disclosing the client, but sources confirmed that the client is Tesla. Musk also noted that Tesla helps Samsung optimize its manufacturing processes.
Additionally, Samsung is currently producing AI4 chips for Tesla, while the new AI5 chips will be manufactured by Samsung's competitor — the company TSMC.
Technological Challenges
Samsung faces serious challenges in chip manufacturing, especially since it is falling behind its competitors, such as TSMC. This agreement could be an important step for Samsung to regain its position in the market.
