The women's football team of England, known as the Lionesses, has successfully secured their title as the European champions for 2025, defeating Spain in a tense final match held in Basel, Switzerland, last week. The victory came after a series of penalties, where goalkeeper Hannah Hampton made two crucial saves, and the decisive strike was executed by Chloe Kelly.
After the victory, the team received an invitation to the celebration at Douning Street, which will take place on Monday, July 28, with the participation of Deputy Prime Minister Anneliese Dodds and Minister of Sport Steven Pikuik. However, despite the win, the government does not plan to declare a public holiday.
The event will occur after the opening of the bus parade on the Mall, which is scheduled for Wednesday. This event will be broadcast live on BBC, ITV, and Sky. The Lionesses became the first English football team to win a major trophy abroad, and the first to win the title after the pandemic.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his pride in the victory, describing it not only as a sporting achievement but also as an inspiration for young people. The captain of the team, Leah Williamson, became the first captain of England to lift a major trophy twice.
After the game, the team celebrated with their families in a hotel and then returned home to begin this new chapter of victory.
