BEIJING -- Heavy rains and flooding in northern China have resulted in the deaths of four individuals, while several others remain missing, authorities reported on July 28, 2025. The tragedy occurred in Lu'anping county of Hebei province, where victims were caught under a landslide.

In an effort to prevent further casualties, local authorities announced the evacuation of over 4,000 people. It was noted that in the outskirts of Miyun, northeast of Beijing, the water level reached the highest mark since 1951, submerging vehicles in a parking lot.

On July 25, flood warnings were issued in Hebei province, and similar warnings were released for Beijing and the neighboring city of Tianjin on July 28. Officials expect that in some areas of Beijing, rainfall could reach up to 25 cm over the course of the day.

The central government directed 50 million yuan (about 7 million USD) for disaster relief to affected regions, including Chengde, Baoding, and Zhangjiakou. Heavy rains have also led to landslides in the neighboring province of Shanxi, where roads have been submerged and crops destroyed.

Chinese meteorologists warn of possible flooding due to rising water levels in small and medium rivers, as well as mountain torrents.
