The USA Plans to Reduce Military Presence in Europe

  • The USA is considering the possibility of reducing military forces in Europe by 30%.
  • Germany is actively discussing future cooperation with the USA.
  • A Pentagon report on military reductions is expected in September.

This is reported by RBC Ukraine, Asharq Al-Awsat.

In Berlin, they expressed concern regarding the possible initiative of the USA to reduce military presence in Europe. Germany believes that the USA may reduce the number of troops faster than European countries can compensate for this loss, reports Politico.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has traveled to Washington for discussions on the situation with Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth. He confirmed that Germany anticipates changes in the USA's position and wants to participate in the coordination process.

The Pentagon is Preparing a Report, Europe Awaits Consequences

A key element of future decisions will be a review of the global reduction of American troops. This concerns not only Europe but also the Indo-Pacific region, where tensions are rising.

The final report from the Pentagon is expected in September. Germany does not know what steps the USA will take and when they will be implemented.

Germany Remains a Key Hub for US Forces

In Germany, there are approximately 35,000 American troops stationed. Key facilities include the Ramstein Air Base and the Grafenwoehr training center, the largest US base outside the USA.

Germany remains heavily dependent on US support in matters of geopolitics, logistics, and strategic sustainability, including the deployment of US nuclear weapons.

Berlin and NATO Urge Coordination

NATO is also concerned about the situation, but after the USA's statements in the Alliance, it is clear that there will be no surprises. Discussions are ongoing daily.

The press secretary of the German Ministry of Defense declined to comment on the details of the negotiations. At the same time, behind closed doors, possible scenarios of a reduction of 30% of US troops in Europe are being discussed.

Berlin Focuses on Diplomacy and Spending

Against the backdrop of uncertainty, Germany hopes for public diplomacy and increased spending. In 2025, the defense budget will amount to nearly 86 billion euros, and by 2029 it will increase to 153 billion euros, which will amount to about 3.5% of GDP.

This allows Berlin to assert its role as a stable partner for the USA and support the reduction of troops. Germany emphasizes its readiness to develop infrastructure for its allies.

Merkel Strengthens Relations with Trump

Chancellor Friedrich Merkel spoke on the phone with Donald Trump in July to discuss arms supplies to Ukraine. During his visit to the USA, he raised the topic of military support.

Trump stated that Europe needs to do more, but acknowledged that Germany lives up to expectations for assistance. This was perceived in Berlin as a positive signal.

Personal Contacts May Play a Key Role

According to experts, such contacts are important, especially with politicians akin to Trump. Personal diplomacy can influence Washington's decisions.

However, the outcome will depend on the USA's position. Germany can only strive to minimize risks and be ready for any developments.

At the NATO summit in June, US President Donald Trump stated that the USA remains committed to the principle of collective defense in the North Atlantic Alliance. In response to a question about his obligations under Article 5 of NATO, Trump replied: "We are with them in all respects."
