Ukraine Honors the Memory of Those Killed in the Line of Duty

  • On July 28, Ukraine commemorates for the first time the Day of Remembrance for those killed in the line of duty.
  • President Zelenskyy emphasized the Russian crimes against Ukrainian military personnel.
  • The General Staff called on international institutions to take action against violations of rights.

This was reported by Interfax Ukraine, Ukrinform.

On July 28, Ukraine commemorates for the first time the Day of Remembrance and honors the defenders and civilians who were killed in the line of duty, as stated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

"On the night of July 28 to 29, 2022, Russia committed one of the most heinous military crimes, killing dozens of Ukrainian servicemen—fighters of 'Azov' in Olenivka. Unfortunately, this is far from the only example of Russian crimes. Today, Ukraine commemorates for the first time the Day of Remembrance and honors the defenders of Ukraine, members of volunteer formations and civilians who were tortured, killed, or died in the line of duty. We remember. And we will not forget," Zelenskyy wrote on his Telegram channel on Monday.

On July 23, the Verkhovna Rada approved a resolution establishing July 28 as the Day of Remembrance for the defenders of Ukraine, members of volunteer formations, and also civilians who were tortured, killed, or died in the line of duty.

On the night of July 28 to 29, 2022, Russian troops committed a terrorist act—an assault on the Volnovakha penal colony located in the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk Oblast, where Ukrainian military personnel—defenders of 'Azovstal' in Mariupol—were held. As a result of the terrorist attack, at least 53 Ukrainian defenders were killed, and over 130 sustained injuries of varying severity.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine also honored the memory of those who were tortured, killed, or died in the line of duty. They emphasized that this day is not only about losses but also about the pain that does not go away. Russia violates the Geneva Conventions, the Convention on the Prohibition of Torture, and the foundations of human values.

"These are military crimes. Crimes against humanity. We must deal with an organized system of abuse against Ukrainian military personnel. International institutions must act. Their pressure is essential," the General Staff noted.

They expressed gratitude to all volunteers, human rights defenders, and journalists who do not allow the tragic part of the fallen to be forgotten. "We honor those who died in the line of duty. Those who were tortured. Those who were killed. We remember. And we will not forget," they concluded in the General Staff.
