Ukraine called on the ICC to issue arrest warrants for those responsible for the crimes in Olenivka

  • Sybiha called on the ICC to issue arrest warrants for the crimes committed
  • The terrorist act in Olenivka occurred on July 29, 2022
  • As a result of the attack, over 50 Ukrainian prisoners were killed

This is reported by Interfax Ukraine, RBC Ukraine.

The Minister of Justice of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue arrest warrants for all those involved in the brutal murder of Ukrainian prisoners in Olenivka. This call was made on the third anniversary of the tragic event that took place on July 29, 2022, when Russia committed a terrorist act, resulting in the death of over 50 Ukrainian soldiers, while more than 150 people suffered injuries.

Sybiha emphasized that these soldiers, who had surrendered, should have been protected under international humanitarian law. He stressed the need for support from the Special Tribunal for the investigation of the crime of aggression by Russia against Ukraine. According to him, only by addressing the core crime—Russia's unprovoked war—can full accountability for all the horrific acts committed be achieved.

The minister also noted that the world should not forget about these events and should not turn away from justice. The accountability for Olenivka is a moral and legal obligation.

Terrorist Act in Olenivka

On the night of July 28 to 29, 2022, Russian troops organized an explosion in the colony in Olenivka, where Ukrainian soldiers were being held, including defenders of Azovstal. As a result of this crime, at least 53 Ukrainian soldiers were killed, and 130 people received varying degrees of injuries.

Along with intercepted conversations, Russian troops deliberately organized a terrorist act to disrupt the exchange process of the prisoners. Ukrainian special services also have supporting evidence confirming the planning of this crime.

In July 2023, it became known that Ukraine returned the bodies of the fallen defenders, the majority of whom were identified.
