France Criticizes New US-EU Trade Agreement

  • The US and EU have signed a new trade agreement worth 750 billion dollars.
  • France sharply criticizes the agreement as "unbalanced" and a "dark day."
  • The agreement allows the US to gain access to the large European market.

This is reported by RBC Ukraine, RBC Ukraine, Asharq Al-Awsat.

On July 27, 2025, US President Donald Trump announced a new large-scale trade agreement with the European Union. According to him, the EU agreed to purchase American energy resources for a total of 750 billion dollars. The agreement provides for zero tariffs on low-value goods, allowing the European Union to maintain competitiveness in business and ensure access to a market of 450 million consumers for the US.

However, the agreement has sparked criticism from France. French Prime Minister Franck Bayrou called the agreement a "dark day" for Europe, stating that the EU capitulated to the US. He emphasized that the agreement is "unbalanced" and does not ensure the protection of sensitive agricultural sectors in Europe.

The Minister for European Affairs of France, Benjamin Adas, noted that the agreement provides temporary stability but does not take into account the interests of important sectors. He also called for activating anti-crisis instruments to be able to respond to US actions in case of necessity.

In response to the criticism of the agreement, the deal was named "the deal of von der Leyen-Trump." Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, commenting on the situation, stated that Trump "is from the deal of von der Leyen on the sidelines," implying the dominating position of the US in the negotiations.
