Official representatives of the USA and China discuss trade issues in Stockholm

  • The meeting in Stockholm aims to improve trade relations.
  • The USA wants to reduce the trade deficit with China.
  • China is committed to greater cooperation and transparency.

On Monday, July 28, 2025, a new meeting of senior officials in the field of trade between China and the USA took place in Stockholm, aimed at reducing tensions in trade between the two largest economies in the world.

The meeting was attended by US Secretary of Commerce Scott Bessent and Vice Premier of China He Lifeng. Bessent expressed hope that negotiations would lead to the extension of existing tariffs.

Experts believe that this meeting may prepare the ground for a possible visit by US President Donald Trump to China, with the aim of solidifying recent improvements in trade relations.

This meeting is already the third this year between He and Bessent, and takes place four months after Trump imposed significant tariffs, including an import tax of up to 145% on Chinese goods, to which China responded with retaliatory measures, causing temporary instability in global financial markets.

The meeting in Stockholm, which follows similar negotiations in Geneva and London, aims to continue the 90-day pause in actions regarding tariffs. During this pause, US tariffs on Chinese goods decreased by 30%, while China established a 10% tariff on American products.

The Trump administration, which recently reached an agreement on tariffs with the European Union, is eager to reduce the trade deficit, which last year amounted to $904 billion, of which nearly $300 billion was attributed to China.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce, for its part, stated that it seeks greater mutual understanding and cooperation, as well as less nervousness in the results of negotiations in Stockholm.
