Scottish Football Association Improves Communication Link for Referees
- Experts from the aviation industry are assisting referees in improving communication.
- New rules have been introduced, including those regarding drop-ball and penalties.
- The head referees are fully engaged in collaboration with clubs and referees.
The Scottish Football Association (SFA) has enlisted experts from the aviation industry to enhance communication between VAR referees in the new football season. Willie Collum, the head of referees at SFA, reported that the best referees in Scotland participated in a meeting with two pilots to learn how to remain calm in stressful situations.
This initiative aims to improve interactions between officials at the VAR center and those on the field before the start of the new season, which kicks off on Saturday. Collum noted that referees working under pressure may share valuable lessons in communication. "It's a matter of life or death," he stressed, comparing it to situations in football.
The primary method of training will be teaching specific communication techniques that help referees and VAR better interact during matches. Collum also emphasized the importance of avoiding interruptions during critical decision-making moments, especially in situations where it is necessary to uphold correct decisions.
Changes in VAR for the New Season
This season also introduces several changes to the rules of the game. The main innovations include:
- The "drop-ball" rule - now the ball will be given to the team that did not commit the foul, if it was not awarded to the referee.
- The "delayed contact" rule - if a player touches the ball with their hand during the execution of a penalty, the penalty kick will be repeated.
- The "eight seconds" rule - the goalkeeper receives a penalty in the form of a corner if they do not release the ball within eight seconds.
Teams remain united, as they can still appeal to the referee during critical moments, which further underscores the importance of communication on the field.
