Blocking of Medicaid Funding for Planned Parenthood in the USA

A federal court in Boston upheld a ruling that allows Planned Parenthood clients across the country to continue receiving reimbursements under the Medicaid program. This decision was a response to attempts by the administration of President Donald Trump to cut funding to the organization.

The Indiana Talvani court had previously issued a preliminary injunction that blocked the termination of Medicaid funding for clinics that do not provide abortion services. In a new ruling issued on July 28, 2025, it barred the application of the law at the national level for certain Planned Parenthood organizations.

In its ruling, the court noted that limiting access to medical services could lead to negative health outcomes for patients, including an increase in unplanned pregnancies and complications due to reduced access to effective contraceptive methods. Talvani also indicated that the legislation, part of which is this limitation, aims to target Planned Parenthood.

The law, signed on July 4, prohibits Medicaid funding for providers that offer abortion services, but does not mention Planned Parenthood explicitly.
