The company Tesla has signed a contract for the supply of microchips from Samsung Electronics for a total amount of $16.5 billion. This became known from a regulatory report from the southern Korean company and was reported by Elon Musk on social media X.
The contract, which begins to take effect on July 26, 2025, and will end on December 31, 2033, provides for the production of the upcoming generation of AI6 chips for Tesla. Musk noted that the new Samsung factory in Texas will specialize in the production of these chips.
In the description, Musk emphasized that the strategic significance of the agreement is hard to overestimate. He also added that Tesla could spend more than the announced $16.5 billion, as the actual production volume could be significantly higher.
Samsung, in turn, reported that the details of the agreement, including the name of the contractor, will not be disclosed until the end of 2033 due to commercial confidentiality. The company previously informed investors about possible changes or cancellation of the contract.
This agreement is an important step for Samsung, which has been facing difficulties in attracting large clients for its chip manufacturing projects. In connection with this announcement, the company's shares rose by 6% after the announcement of the agreement.
According to the information, Samsung is the second-largest supplier of chip manufacturing services in the world, following only Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company.
It is expected that Samsung will announce a decline in profits in the next quarter, which is related to the low demand for its chip manufacturing services.
