- Cooper announced his participation in the 2026 Senate elections.
- Republicans are also preparing for elections, presenting their own candidates.
- Cooper has significant political experience and supports the Democrats.
Roy Cooper, former governor of North Carolina from the Democratic Party, officially announced his intention to run for the U.S. Senate in the open seat left by Republican Tom Tillis in 2026.
In his video, shared on social media, Cooper noted that the middle class in the U.S. is facing challenges, while the largest corporations and the wealthy receive enormous tax breaks at the expense of ordinary people. He emphasized that upcoming elections could determine the fate of the middle class in America.
Cooper, who is supported by the Democrats, has become a favorite in the nomination battle. He has significant experience in the political arena, including 16 years in the position of attorney general and two terms as governor.
The Republican Party is also preparing for elections. The head of the National Republican Committee Mike Utley plans to announce his candidacy, having received support from former President Donald Trump.
Cooper, who recently returned from a speaking engagement at Harvard, noted that his political career has already lasted nearly 40 years. He has repeatedly criticized the Republicans for their views, particularly on issues of abortion and education.
"North Carolina wants a senator who will protect working families," the Republican press service stated in response to Cooper's announcement.
