Super League clubs have decided to expand the tournament to 14 teams

  • The Super League will expand to 14 teams in 2026.
  • Two new clubs will be selected by an independent commission.
  • Clubs from the Championship will have a chance to participate in the league.

The Super League will once again become a 14-team tournament in 2026 after clubs with elite rugby voted for the expansion to two teams at the meeting in Leeds.

Over the last decade, the league has featured 12 teams, but at a meeting on July 28, 2025, a decision on the expansion was approved. This opens up the possibility for the promotion of two clubs from the Championship to the elite division.

The process of selecting new teams has not yet been clarified. However, along with the new evaluation system IMG, two more clubs will be added to the top 12 clubs that receive the highest points, recommended by an independent commission.

This commission, composed of members of the strategic committee, will determine which clubs with the best applications can qualify for the league. Clubs such as York Knights, Bradford Bulls, and London Broncos now have a chance to participate in the Super League starting in 2026.
