Zelensky signed a law to increase the status of the Security Service of Ukraine

On July 28, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law that provides for an increase in the number of employees of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).

Details: According to the new law, the total number of SBU employees in peacetime will increase from 27,000 to 37,000, and during special periods – from 31,000 to 41,000.

The operational subdivision of the special group "Alpha" will perform the functions of the department of counter-terrorism and criminal justice. It will have 10,000 employees.

In addition, the law includes a provision that allows SBU members to use weapons and military equipment during anti-terrorist operations and measures to ensure national security and defense.

Background: On July 16, 311 deputies voted for the adoption of the law in the second reading in parliament.

Along with the new law, there are also plans to improve the organizational structure of the SBU and enhance social guarantees for its employees.

Recent surveys show that the majority of Ukrainians trust the Security Service of Ukraine, which is seen as a positive change in wartime conditions.
