Google Updates Earthquake Detection System for Android

  • The Google earthquake detection system did not function during the earthquakes in Turkey.
  • Improved algorithms for detection for better response to earthquakes.
  • The system is available in over 90 countries, including the USA.

According to The Verge, CNET.

Google has updated its earthquake detection system based on Android, which failed to detect earthquakes during the earthquakes in Turkey in February 2023. The system, which turns smartphones into "mini-seismometers," is designed to detect earthquakes and send alerts seconds before the onset of strong shaking.

During two powerful earthquakes in Turkey, the system did not send its highest alerts "ShakeAlert" to approximately 10 million people in the region. Instead, Android users received alerts below the threshold level or sometimes none at all. This drew criticism and highlighted the need to review the detection algorithms.

The earthquake detection system is accessible in more than 90 countries and utilizes a selection that fixes the phone's accelerometer for faster detection of seismic activity. When a sufficient number of phones are received, the system assesses the location, magnitude, and zone of the earthquake, sending alerts to users' screens.

Google has already improved detection algorithms and previously modeled the first Turkish earthquake with improved results. The system achieved recognition for its current alerts during earthquakes in California, Greece, and Japan, but the incidents in Turkey stressed the challenges in creating a global warning system.

Currently, Google continues to enhance its earthquake detection technology and encourages Android users to activate this feature to receive alerts in case of emergencies.
