- Significant influence of obesity and alcohol on the increase in liver cancer cases.
It is expected that the number of liver cancer cases will rise by 2050. The reasons for this increase are the growing prevalence of obesity and alcoholism, as researchers from Hong Kong assert. According to projections, in 2022, there were 870,000 registered cases of liver cancer, and by 2050, their number could reach 1.52 million.
Experts note that the share of liver cancer cases associated with obesity will rise from 5% to 11%. It is also expected that the share of cases caused by alcohol will increase from 18.8% to 21.1% by 2050.
Currently, the share of cases associated with hepatitis viruses is decreasing; in particular, hepatitis B and C, which are the main causes of liver cancer, are reducing their share in the overall statistics of cases. Researchers emphasize that 60% of liver cancer cases may be preventable if effective preventive measures are implemented.
The primary treatment for metabolic dysfunction related to fatty liver disease (MASLD) is adherence to a balanced diet and physical activity. Research highlights the importance of controlling body mass, reducing alcohol consumption, and treating hepatitis to prevent liver cancer cases.
According to data, in 2022, 64% of adults in England were overweight or suffered from obesity. This statistic underscores the need to increase awareness about the risks associated with obesity and liver cancer.
