Propose to Rename the Kennedy Center in Honor of Trump

Republicans in the U.S. have introduced a bill that provides for the renaming of the Kennedy Center, a well-known cultural institution in Washington, to "The Donald Trump Center for the Performing Arts." According to the information, the bill was presented by Representative Bob Onder from Missouri on July 28, 2025.
This bill is titled "The Act for the Restoration of the Arts." In it, Onder describes Trump as "a patriot of the arts" and a significant cultural figure. The proposal to rename the Kennedy Center followed a recent vote in which Republicans supported the renaming of the Opera Theater of the center in honor of Melania Trump.
However, according to several experts, this may violate the law, given that the Kennedy Center was established. Specifically, the law prohibits the renaming of institutions, except for the Eisenhower Theater, in honor of the president who signed the law for its establishment in 1958.
Republicans must go through legislative procedures to introduce amendments to this law. Currently, the proposal to rename the Opera Theater is already included in the bill for the financing of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
In addition, Trump appointed a new president of the Kennedy Center, Rika Grenella, and dismissed members of the previous council, appointed by his predecessor, Joe Biden. In 2025, Trump showed greater interest in the arts, stating the need to counter "anti-American propaganda" from the center's program.
It should be noted that the Opera Theater of the Kennedy Center is the venue for the annual Kennedy Center Honors ceremony, which honors prominent individuals and politicians. However, at a recent event where Trump and Melania were present, part of the audience expressed their discontent.
