States file lawsuit against Trump administration over SNAP data

  • A coalition of 20 states has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration.
  • The government demands the transfer of personal data of participants in the SNAP program.
  • States believe that this may violate confidentiality laws.

Washington — A coalition of 20 state attorneys general has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, as it demands the transfer of personal information of individuals who receive assistance through the SNAP program (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). States are concerned that this data could be used for mass deportations.

The U.S. government, including the Department of Agriculture, has demanded the transfer of personal information, including social security numbers and home addresses, claiming that this could help combat fraud in a program that currently serves over 42 million people.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta stated that such demands violate confidentiality laws and undermine trust between the federal government and citizens. States are calling for a ban on the transfer of data, considering it a violation of privacy.

The Trump administration has already previously used federal agencies to gain access to personal data of Americans. Earlier, a court rejected a request to halt the transfer of sensitive data of tax filers, which could be used to identify illegal immigrants.

Federal officials assert that the obtained data helps ensure the legality of participation in the SNAP program, while civil rights advocates express concern over the potential misuse of this information for immigration enforcement.
