On Saturday, July 28, 2025, at Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, a knife attack occurred, injuring 11 people. The attacker, identified as Bradford Gill, was previously banned for terrorism and had 11 prior attempts at violence. Police did not find any obvious motivation for this violence, which involved a kitchen knife measuring 9 centimeters in length.
Witness to the incident, 39-year-old Matviy Kolakovski, was shopping with his daughter when he heard the screams of a worker about the emergency. After that, he decided to act and confronted the attacker, who was threatening a woman with a knife on the street. Not having a weapon, Kolakovski used a shopping cart to stop the attacker.
Inside the store, Kolakovski saw Gill stab the woman in the abdomen, and, trying to save her, he struck the attacker with a shopping cart. After that, Kolakovski encountered another person with a cart, while another individual rushed to Gill with a weapon, demanding that he drop the knife. After several moments of struggle, Gill dropped the knife on the ground, and Kolakovski managed to hold him until the police arrived.
All 11 injured, among whom were men and women aged 29 to 84, are expected to survive. Police confirmed that Gill had a history of mental health problems and had previously been banned in connection with violence.
In court, Gill appeared disheveled and, it seems, stated that he is innocent. His bail was set at $100,000.
