The Growing Demand for Argan Oil Impacts Morocco

  • Argan oil is an important source of income for women in Morocco.
  • The increasing demand for oil threatens the argan tree population through excessive harvesting.
  • The government aims to restore forests, but the results so far have been limited.

Argan oil, which is obtained from argan trees, is an important resource for women in rural areas of Morocco. It is used not only as a cosmetic product but also as a means for securing livelihoods. However, the growing demand for this oil creates serious challenges for the local ecosystems.

The argan oil industry has become popular worldwide thanks to its nourishing and revitalizing properties. The production of a liter of argan oil requires nearly two days of work, while women who produce it earn approximately $3 per kilogram. This allows them to provide some financial support within limited means.

However, the increasing demand for argan oil leads to its overharvesting, which, in turn, threatens the sustainability of argan trees. Studies indicate that the area of forests where these trees grow has decreased by 40% over the last decades. In addition to this, changes in climate, such as droughts, also affect their survival.

Ecological problems faced by argan trees include reduced fruit-bearing capacity and increased pest outbreaks. Previously, these forests were managed by communities, but now this system is beginning to break down.

Women who work in cooperatives usually receive low wages, while profits from oil sales go to large multinational companies. The value of a liter of argan oil has risen to $600 (about $60), which significantly exceeds the prices that were set 30 years ago.

The Moroccan government is trying to solve the problem by initiating projects for forest restoration, but the results so far are not sufficient. Additionally, there is a replanting of new trees on private lands, but droughts hinder their growth.
