Ancient Evidence of Child Cannibalism Discovered in Europe
- The oldest evidence of child cannibalism in Europe has been discovered.
- Remains of a child were found at the archaeological site of Grand Dolina.
- Research indicates a systematic practice of consuming human flesh.
The archaeological research at the site Grand Dolina in Spain revealed remains of a child, which, according to the researchers, is the oldest evidence of cannibalism in Europe. The vertebra of the child, dated to approximately 850,000 years ago, shows clear signs that indicate a recent decapitation.
According to the research, the child was likely between 2 to 4 years old. Researchers from the Catalan Institute of Human Paleoecology and Social Evolution (IPHES) identified on the bones signs that indicate processing for consumption, similar to those found on the bones of animals.
Along with archaeologist Palmira SaladiƩ, these findings indicate a systematic practice of consuming human flesh, which could have served various functions, including nutritional supplementation. More than 30% of the identified human remains at this site may show signs of processing.
These results indicate that early humans likely utilized their close relatives as a resource for food, as well as a means of controlling territory. Research continues, and scientists hope to uncover even more remains in the unexplored layers of the cave.
