The Beginning of Construction of a Large Data Center for Artificial Intelligence
- Chayen will become the site for the construction of a data center for artificial intelligence.
- The project requires the approval of local regulators.
- The location already has experience with Microsoft and Meta Platforms.
Chayen, the state of Wyoming, will become the site for the construction of a data center for artificial intelligence, which will consume more electricity than all the homes in Wyoming combined. Mayor Patrick Collins stated that this is a significant project that will change the situation in the region.
Due to the cold climate and accessible electricity, Chayen is transforming into a center of computational power. The city has been home to Microsoft data centers since 2012, and the construction of a data center valued at $800 million is also being completed by Meta Platforms.
The new center, a joint initiative of Tallgrass and Crusoe, will start operations with a power capacity of 1.8 gigawatts and can expand to 10 gigawatts. One gigawatt can supply electricity to 1 million homes, which is more than the population of Wyoming, which stands at about 590,000 people.
Wyoming is a major energy exporter, producing approximately 12 times more energy than it consumes. The project anticipates the provision of specialized energy supply from gas generation and renewable sources.
Governor Mark Gordon assessed the importance of the project for the gas industry in Wyoming. He believes that data centers consume a lot of energy, and experts believe they can be powered by renewable energy to reduce the impact on the climate.
The data center will be built several miles south of Chayen, near the Colorado border. The project requires approval from state and local regulators, but the mayor believes that construction can begin as soon as possible.
OpenAI, the developer of Chat GPT, is exploring opportunities for expanding its data centers, although it has not yet confirmed whether the project will be part of their plans in Chayen.
