The EU modernizes infrastructure for the rapid relocation of troops
- The EU is investing 17 billion euros in modernizing infrastructure.
- The speed of troop relocation in the EU requires significant improvements.
- Currently, European roads are unable to withstand the increased load of tanks.
This is reported by RBC Ukraine, Ukrayinska Pravda.
The European Union has found that its roads, bridges, and rail infrastructure are unable to support the rapid relocation of troops, tanks, and military cargo in the context of the war with Russia. This information was voiced by Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the European Commissioner for Transport.
He noted that attempts to transfer troops to the eastern border of the EU and NATO may be delayed at tunnels or destroy bridges. To improve military mobility, it is planned to spend 17 billion euros on modernizing infrastructure.
Tzitzikostas emphasized that old bridges need renovation, narrow bridges must be expanded, and some bridges need to be rebuilt from scratch. Currently, the relocation of military equipment and personnel from Western Europe to the East takes weeks or even months.
The EU is developing a strategy that would allow the relocation of troops over several hours or days in case of an attack. For this purpose, it is planned to modernize 500 infrastructure facilities on four military corridors. Specific information about these facilities is not disclosed for security reasons.
Tzitzikostas also emphasized the need to reduce bureaucratic procedures so that tanks do not get delayed in paperwork when crossing borders.
This initiative is part of a broader military preparedness effort, especially given the existing warnings about a possible large conflict with Moscow and possible reductions in the military presence of the USA in Europe.
